Where California's area codes came from

1. 1947: 213 was among the original 1947 area codes, serving Los Angeles and Montebello.
2. 1947: 415 belonged to the original set of 1947 codes, covering Belvedere, Corte Madera and Ignacio.
3. 1947: 916 belonged to the original 1947 area codes, covering Courtland, Elk Grove and Fair Oaks (sacramento).
4. In 1951, 714 split away from 213, taking Anaheim, Brea and Buena Park with it.
5. 1957: 805 split away from 213, serving Arroyo Grande, Atascadero and Bradley.
6. 1958: 209 separated from 415, serving Angels Camp, Atwater and Catheys Valley.
7. In 1959, 408 split from 415. Its area covered Campbell, Gilroy and Los Gatos.
8. 1959: 707 was carved out of 415, covering Annapolis, Arcata and Benicia.
9. 1982: 619 came out of 714, for Campo, Chula Vista and Coronado.

14. In 1997, 562 split from 310. Its area covered Alamitos, Compton:compton Da and Downey.
15. 1997: 760 separated from 619, for Baker, Barstow and Benton.
16. In 1997, 626 split from 818. It covered Alhambra, Arcadia and Azusa-glendora.
17. In 1997, 650 split from 415. It covered Half Moon Bay, La Honda and Los Altos.
