For 7 years, 704 covered North Carolina on its own, until 919 came into service in 1954.

1. 1947: 704 was among the original 1947 area codes, serving Albemarle, Alton and Ansonville.
2. 1954: 919 came into service as a new area code, covering Angier, Apex and Benson.
3. 1993: 910 was split off from 919, covering Abbottsburg, Aberdeen and Acme.
4. 1997: 336 was split off from 910, covering Advance, Anderson and Asheboro.
5. 1998: 252 was split off from 919, covering Ahoskie, Atlantic and Aulander.
