Where Virginia's area codes came from

For 26 years 703 served Virginia on its own, until 804 opened in 1973.

1. 1947: 703 was among the original 1947 area codes, covering Arcola, Braddock and Dale City.
2. 1973: 804 began serving as a new area code, covering Amelia Court House, Ashland and Beaverdam.
3. 1995: 540 was split off from 703, covering Alum Ridge, Ballard and Basye.
4. 1996: 757 separated from 804, covering Belle Haven, Boykins and Cape Charles.
5. 2000: 571 was added as an overlay for 703, covering the same area.
6. 2001: 434 was split off from 804, covering Alberta, Allwood and Altavista.
7. 2001: 276 was split off from 540, covering Abingdon, Appalachia and Ararat.
8. 2022: 948 was added as an overlay for 757, covering the same area.
9. 2022: 826 was added as an overlay for 540, covering the same area.
10. 2024: 686 was added as an overlay for 804, covering the same area.
