How Massachusetts area codes came about

1. 1947: 413 was one of the original area codes of 1947, covering Adams, Amherst, plus Amherst Franklin County.
2. 1947: 617 was one of the original area codes of 1947, covering Belmont, Boston, plus Brighton.
3. 1988: 508 was split from 617 to serve Assonet, Attleboro and Auburn.
4. 1997: 781 was split from 617 to serve Arlington, Braintree and Bryantville.
5. 1997: 978 was split from 508 to serve Acton, Amesbury and Andover.
6. 2001: 339 came in as an overlay for 781, covering the same area.
7. 2001: 351 came in as an overlay for 978, covering the same area.
8. 2001: 774 came in as an overlay for 508, covering the same area.
9. 2001: 857 came in as an overlay for 617, covering the same area.
